Released in May 1984, the country artist’s patriotic hymn was famously played at the 1984 Republican National Convention when President Ronald Reagan sought re-election and appears on Lee Greenwood’s 1984 album You've Got a Good Love Comin'. The song went on to become an anthem fully charged by its flag-waving chorus, "And I'm proud to be an American / Where at least I know I'm free / And I won't forget the men who died / Who gave that right to me / And I'd gladly stand up / Next to you and defend her still today / Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land / God bless the USA." "God Bless the U.S.A" made it to Number 7 on the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart at the time of its release in 1984, but later re-entered the spotlight during the Gulf War in 1990 and 1991, and was included on Lee Greenwood's 1992 album American Patriot. It was re-released as a single following the September 11 attacks and reached Number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in 2001.
