Perhaps one of the finest examples of what would be known as the country outlaw genre, "Folsom Prison Blues" was written by Johnny Cash in 1953 after watching the film Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison. It was included in his 1957 studio debut Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar! With time, the track went on to become one of Johnny Cash's trademark songs, reaching the peak of its popularity after being performed live for a crowd of inmates on his 1968 live album At Folsom Prison. This version reached the top of the Billboard US Hot Country Songs charts in the US and even earned Johnny Cash a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance in 1969. In latter years, "Folsom Prison Blues" was covered by a whole host of both country and non-country artists such as Gram Parsons, Slim Harpo, and Jerry Lee Lewis. In 2020, North Carolina-based singer-songwriter recorded a powerful live rendition of the track, switching the original version's rockabilly vibes for a more modern, electric blues sound.
