"Jack & Diane" is one of John Mellencamp's (performing as John Cougar) definitive singles, a hooky heartland rock anthem inspired by the 1962 Tennessee Williams film Sweet Bird of Youth. Propelled by booming 1980s drums, handclaps, and relatable lyrics about a heartland romance ("Little ditty about Jack and Diane / Two American kids growin' up in the heartland / Jack, he's gonna be a football star / Diane's debutante backseat of Jacky's car"), the track was catapulted to the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1982 where it stayed for four weeks. "Jack & Diane" was released as the second single from John Mellencamp's 1982 album American Fool, his fifth studio album, which was also released under the stage name John Cougar. The LP took John Mellencamp's career to commercial new heights, shooting to the top of the Billboard album chart where it hung around for nine weeks and sealing his fate as a classic American songwriter.
