"Piece of My Heart" is a soul song written by Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns, originally recorded by Erma Franklin in 1967. Franklin's rendition reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles chart. The following year, Janis Joplin, as part of Big Brother and the Holding Company, covered the song on their album Cheap Thrills, released in August 1968. This version transformed the soulful original into a raw, blues-infused rock anthem, showcasing Janis Joplin's powerful vocals. The single peaked at number 12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song's lyrics convey the pain of unreciprocated love, with the protagonist expressing a willingness to endure heartbreak for the sake of the relationship. Musically, the track features distorted guitar solos and a driving rhythm section, amplifying its emotional intensity. Over time, "Piece of My Heart" has been covered by various artists, including Faith Hill in 1994, whose rendition topped the country charts, and Melissa Etheridge with Joss Stone in 2005.
