Harry Nilsson opened his seminal 1971 album Nilsson Schmilsson with this jaunty, nostalgic meditation on the happy-go-lucky nature of youth. In "Gotta Get Up," the adult protagonist feels tied down by his office job, and is struggling to "get home before the sun comes up" following a night on the tiles. Harry Nilsson poured his own memories of working in a bank into the semi-autobiographical song, which was released as a single with the Badfinger cover "Without You" on the A-side. Decades later, "Gotta Get Up" reached the ears of a whole new generation of music and culture fans after it was given a leading role in the hit 2019 Netflix series Russian Doll, which stars Natasha Lyonne (also the show's co-creator) as a computer programmer called Nadia caught in a Groundhog Day-style time loop.
