The Doors turned to flamenco music for inspiration on this 1968 wide-eyed reverie from their third studio album Waiting for the Sun, released in 1968. "Spanish Caravan" gave Doors guitarist Robby Krieger the chance to show off his flamenco guitar-playing skills for a curveball influenced by the Granada-born Granaína style of flamenco and the classical piece "Asturias (Leyenda)," composed by Isaac Albéniz. "Carry me, caravan, take me away / Take me to Portugal, take me to Spain / Andalucia with fields full of grain," begins the song. "Spanish Caravan" was the seventh track on Waiting for the Sun, which was issued by Elektra Records in July 1968 and became the band's only chart-topping album, reaching the summit of the US Billboard 200 chart where it stayed for four weeks. The follow-up to 1967's Strange Days also spawned The Doors' second US number-one single in their now signature track "Hello, I Love You."
