The Who tore through a dossier of hits during the first two decades of their existence, birthing a counterculture classic with their career-defining 1965 debut album My Generation and moving onto rock operas with the release of Tommy in 1969. "5:15" was included on the trailblazing band's second rock opera, Quadrophenia, which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2023 and tells the story of a mod named Jimmy. At the crux of "5:15"—the first track on the second disc of Quadrophenia—is a drug-fuelled train journey from London to Brighton during which Jimmy imbibes several purple hearts (amphetamines). "Out of my brain on the 5:15 / Out of my brain on the train," goes the chorus. The song features a field recording of a real-life train whistle captured at London's Waterloo station while the 17-track double album Quadrophenia was a tribute to the British youth culture movement of the era and composed in its entirely by The Who's Pete Townshend.
