Godsmack unleashed an almighty rock ballad about the urgent topic of mental health with their 2018 single "Under Your Scars." The piano-driven song, which found the hard rockers in a reflective mood – trying their hand at a ballad – and was inspired by an unlikely source: Lady Gaga. The track also inspired the US troupe to launch their Scars Foundation, in order to raise awareness of mental health. "Under Your Scars" extols the power of love and its effect on self-acceptance: "Under your scars, I pray / You're like a shooting star in the rain / You're everything that feels like home to me, yeah / Under your scars / I could live inside you time after time / If you'd only let me live inside of mine / Live inside of mine," sings frontman Sully Erna in the chorus. "Under Your Scars" was delivered as the third single from the band's seventh studio album, When Legends Rise (2018).
