Concept album lovers Genesis conjure the mythological, forest-dwelling squonk in this prog-rock odyssey from their 1976 album A Trick of the Tail, which depicts the folkoric creature as "not flesh, nor fish, nor bone" in a retelling of the hunted ("I've got you, I've got you / You'll never get away") through their imaginative eyes. Written by Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, the song's meandering organ and guitar wig-outs were intended to tread a heavier path, while the lyrics gave Phil Collins – in his new post as the band's shiny lead singer following the departure of Peter Gabriel – a platform to show off his skills. His stellar performance helped to silence the skeptics and forge a new era for the Surrey prog titans; A Trick of the Tail, won over critics as well as securing chart success in the UK and U.S., where it reached Number 3 and Number 31 respectively.
