As one of the most successful and influential albums of the 1970s, British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours has its share of highlights. For this reason, listening to the album almost feels like listening to a Greatest Hits compilation. One of such songs is “Gold Dust Woman,” the song that closes out the album in its original release. It was written and sung by Stevie Nicks, and released as a B-side to the “Don’t Stop” and “You Make Loving Fun” singles (in the UK and the US, respectively). It was produced by Fleetwood Mac along with Richard Dashut and Ken Caillat. According to Caillat, the take that ended up on the album was recorded at 4 AM after a long night of failed attempts, with Stevie Nicks covering her head with a black scarf to isolate herself. The song’s lyrics are about attempting to make it through a bad time. “Gold Dust Woman” would go on to be covered by the band Hole in 1996 for the soundtrack album for The Crow: City of Angels.
