Sandwiched between the whispery folk lullaby-turned-stadium rock stomper of "Zombie Eaters" and the driving indie-pop of "Underwater Love," "The Real Thing" is the centrepiece of Faith No More's Grammy-nominated 1989 breakout album of the same name. With the band's six-octave-endowed vocalist Mike Patton (who made his Faith No More debut on this album, writing lyrics for all of the songs) potentially hinting at vampirism over a jazzed-out, dub-flecked grungey pile-on, "The Real Thing" builds a salacious depiction of pleasure and freedom. Bolstered by the anthemic standout track and top ten hit "Epic" – which was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1991 – The Real Thing took up home in the Billboard Top 20. It was also Faith No More's first album without vocalist Chuck Mosley, and kicked off the start of a beautiful relationship with the enigmatic Mike Patton in the vocal spotlight.
