Originally released in the summer of 1992, Faith No More's fourth studio album Angel Dust found the band shedding their skin once again, moving away from the funk metal sound of The Real Thing (1989) and venturing down untrodden paths. Unlike its predecessor, Angel Dust was the first album where lead singer Mike Patton had any influence over the recording process. It was also the last Faith No More LP to feature guitarist Jim Martin, who reportedly left because of the band's new direction. Despite being heavier, more eclectic, and theatrical than any of the band's early albums, Angel Dust eventually became Faith No More's best-selling album thanks to singles like "Easy," "Land of Sunshine," "Midlife Crisis," and "Everything's Ruined." Written by Billy Gould, Roddy Bottum, and Mike Patton, the latter is a radio-friendly rock number with obscure lyrics about greed and fame. According to Mike Patton, the vocals in the chorus were inspired by Frank Sinatra and easy-listening music. Shortly after its release, "Everything's Ruined" peaked at Number 28 on the UK Singles Chart.
