Written in the aftermath of an artistic and personal breakup, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" is the breakthrough hit from the British new wave duo Eurythmics. After being involved in the pop rock band The Tourists from 1976 to 1980, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart decided to put an end to both the group and their romantic relationship, choosing to keep working together as a duo under the Eurythmics moniker. After the timid success of their studio debut In the Garden (1981), the pair skyrocketed to fame with their second full-length Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (1983), which rose to Number 3 in the UK Albums Chart and Number 15 on the Billboard 200. This was largely thanks to the title track, a sophisticated piece of nihilistic pop built around cascades of synthesizers that marked the dawn of a new era in their career. Released as the fourth and final single from the LP, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" topped the Billboard Hot 100 and spawned an iconic music video that received heavy airplay on MTV.
