"Layla" is a tale of forbidden love told through a monumental guitar riff and gravelly pipes that set the rock 'n' roll world on fire. Eric Clapton wrote the song about his feelings for George Harrison's then-wife Pattie Boyd, and throughout the track can be heard howling that she's 'got him on his knees', and 'begs' her to 'ease his worried mind'. Written by Eric Clapton and drummer Jim Gordon, "Layla"—which was inspired by 12th-century Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi—formed the centrepiece of Derek and the Dominos' celebrated 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Songs, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000. It later came to light that the piano coda should have been credited to Rita Coolidge, who was Jim Gordon's girlfriend at the time. An acoustic interpretation of "Layla" was released by Eric Clapton in 1992 and picked up the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. Oh, and Eric Clapton eventually married Pattie Boyd in 1979.
