Long Island duo Eric B. & Rakim formed in 1986 and recorded their debut album Paid in Full the following year. Bristling with scratching, flutes, and that hypnotic dusty drum loop, the title track is a bona fide early classic of hip-hop's golden age, a killer tune about getting paid for studio work. The track sees Rakim celebrate the feeling of doing what he loves: rapping. Released the same year as the original (1987), Coldcut kept the song alive on a remix that made use of vocal samples, including "Im Nin'Alu" by the Israeli singer Ofra Haza and “Don’t Look Any Further” by Dennis Edwards, and was later sampled by Nas for his Stillmatic (Freestyle) mixtape in 2001. Snoop Dogg performed "Paid in Full" in the 2003 movie Old School, swapping his favourite dish from "fish" to chicken wings, and the track has also appeared in movies White Boy Rick (2018), Brown Sugar (2002), and CB4 (1993).
