This infectiously funky love letter to the golden age of hip-hop boasts some delicious wordplay from Rakim ("I was a fiend before I became a teen / I melted microphones instead of cones of ice cream / Music orientated so when hip-hop was originated / Fitted like pieces of puzzles, complicated") as he waxes lyrical about his addition to rap over Eric B.'s fresh East Coast beats. Released in 1988, "Microphone Fiend"— which features a solid-gold sample of Average White Band's 1975 groover "School Boy Crush"—was issued as the second single from Eric B. & Rakim's sophomore album Follow the Leader; the follow-up to the pair's 1987 debut masterpiece, Paid in Full. The LP made it to number 22 on the US Billboard Top Pop Albums and number seven on Billboard's Top Black Albums chart while generating three other singles aside from "Microphone Fiend:" "Follow the Leader," "The R," and "Lyrics of Fury."
