Following his discharge from the army in the early 1960s, American singer Elvis Presley returned to his music career with a string of singles that ditched the rebelliousness of his early rock and roll years in favor of a radio-friendly pop sound. One fine example of this marked shift in style is the single "(You're the) Devil in Disguise," a doo-wop-flavored rockabilly number written by Bill Giant, Bernie Baum, and Florence Kaye. Just like many other Elvis Presley releases from that era, the track features backing vocals by American gospel vocal group The Jordanaires. Its lyrics describe someone realizing their lover is not really who they thought they were. "(You're the) Devil in Disguise" was released on June 18, 1963, and peaked at Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, receiving Gold certification by the RIAA for sales of over 500,000 copies. Internationally, the song reached the top of the charts in Canada, the UK, Belgium, France, Italy, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden. It was later included in the compilation Elvis' Gold Records, Vol. 4 from 1968.
