Sir Elton John connects with his songs so well that it’s easy to forget that Bernie Taupin was the lyricist for most of his big hits. Taupin wrote the lyrics for “Your Song” when he was only 17. He remembers scribbling the lyrics on a pad at the kitchen table in John’s mother’s apartment. The singer sat at the piano and finished the song in about 20 minutes. Taupin has described the song as something that could only have been written at that innocent time in his young life. “Your Song” became a huge hit for the singer. In a 1975 interview with Rolling Stone, John Lennon praised the song, calling it the first new thing that happened since The Beatles.  The backing track for “Your Song” is available as an instrumental.
