The piano-driven ballad "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" was initially released as the lead single from Elton John's eighth studio album Caribou. Written by Elton John with lyricist Bernie Taupin during a ten-day period in early 1974, the track starts off with just piano and a few percussion accents, and gradually builds up into a lavish chorus that features backing vocals by Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys and Toni Tennille. The iconic horn arrangement heard at the end of the chorus was composed by conductor Del Newman, who had previously worked with Elton John on his seventh album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973). "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" bowed at Number 16 in the UK and fared even better in the United States, where it peaked at Number 2. However, the song's most successful version appeared in 1991 when Elton John and George Michael recorded it as a live duet, reaching the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
