Elton John apparently had the music of Van Morrison in mind when he wrote "High Flying Bird," a track that literally soars with intensity. "My high-flying bird has flown from out my arms / I thought myself her keeper / She thought I meant her harm / She thought I was the archer / A weather man of words," he sings in the chorus, ultimately vowing to "never shoot down my high-flying bird." This soft-rock ballad was featured as the closing track on 1973 album Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player—his sixth studio album, released by DJM Records, becoming his second consecutive number one album in the US and first number one album in the UK—and released as the B-Side to the promotional single “Teacher I Need You.” With lyrics penned by the enduring Elton John mainstay Bernie Taupin, "High Flying Bird" was later used to soundtrack the first season of the hit Showtime series Californication.
