In the early 1970s, English singer-songwriter Elton John was at the peak of his creative career, with albums like Honky Château (1972) and Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player (1973) topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Regarded by many as his magnum opus, his seventh studio album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road appeared in 1974 and, like its predecessors, soared to the top of both the UK Official Albums Chart and the Billboard 200. Singles like the title track, "Bennie and the Jets," or "Candle in the Wind" all became hits in their own right and turned Elton John into one of the best-selling artists of all time. Despite not having entered any official charts, the track "Grey Seal" was a great example of Elton John's peerless songwriting skills and technical virtuosity, accompanied by longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin's bizarre lyrics. Previously, the song had been released as a B-side for the 1970 single "Rock and Roll Madonna" but was re-recorded for the Elton John's 1974 landmark album.
