Forming in LA in 1978, Dokken tore through the '80s with big hair and even bigger riffs. The glam metal band – originally comprising Don Dokken on vocals, George Lynch on lead guitar, Mick Brown on drums, and Jeff Pilson – burned brightly for four years, releasing four '80s-era albums before splitting up in 1989 (however, they got back together four years later). "The Hunter" represents the fruits of their fertile '80s labour, a classic hair metal tune in both sound and lyrics ("I'm a hunter / Searching for love / On these lonely streets again / I'm the hunter"). Released as the first single from the band's 1985 album Under Lock and Key – which reached number 32 on the US Billboard 200 where it hung out for an impressive 67 weeks – the track gave Dokken a Mainstream Rock top 40 single, rising to number 25 on the chart and sticking around for nine weeks.
