Dire Straits entered the annals of cultural history with their bluesy new wave blockbuster "Money for Nothing" not simply on the strength of the song's sonic character and chart success, but also for its trailblazing music video, which was one of the first examples of CGI human characters, winning Video of the Year at the 1986 MTV Video Awards. Taking a satirical look at the shifting social and cultural landscape of the '80s ("I want my MTV"), "Money for Nothing" was also famously inspired by a random encounter with an appliance-store employee whose unplanned rant unwittingly would go on to inspire "Money For Nothing”. Released in May 1985, the song went on to become Dire Straits's most commercially successful single, going all the way to Number 1 where it stuck around for three weeks on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and Top Rock Tracks chart as well as reaching Number 4 in the band's UK homeland.
