Immediately after parting ways with the seminal punk rock act Misfits, founding member Glenn Danzig created the heavy metal-tinged, horror punk project Samhain in 1983. Following the release of two albums and an EP, Samhain became the first artist to sign with Rick Rubin's new label Def American in 1987. The band changed its name to Danzig shortly after and released their eponymous studio debut a year later. Entirely produced by Rubin, the album was the label's first release and featured some of the band's most emblematic songs, including "Mother" and "She Rides." The latter is a stripped-down bluesy punk number whose lyrics were heavily influenced by the Lilith mythology and Christopher Brennan's poetry. Featuring just a couple of guitar tracks and Glenn Danzig's Jim Morrison-esque vocals, the track's strong sexual undercurrent is emphasized by moaning sounds that can be heard lower in the mix.
