No one quite does misery like goth-metal overlords Danzig. On this doomy, gloomy baroque blues ballad from their second album for Def American Recordings, the Rick Rubin-produced Danzig II: Lucifuge( 1990), frontman Glenn Danzig comes off sounding like a gothic Elvis Presley or a particularly anguished Roy Orbison as he bellows misanthropically in the chorus: "You cry a thousand tears / Darling don't despair / I know your heart still bleeds / Darling don't you care / There's blood in your tears." According to the songwriter himself, "Blood and Tears" (which he namechecked as one of his favourites on the album) is about a "girl’s failed relationship and her subsequent torment" and the mixture of agonised vocals and slow-burning hard rock energy—replete with a spine-tingling guitar solo from John Christ—really gives "Blood and Tears" a sense of the whole tormented soul burning in hell thing.
