Few songs are instantly recognizable as Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters," a mournful power ballad that turned them into one of the biggest metal crossover acts in recent history. Originally included in their seminal self-titled fifth studio LP (also known as The Black Album), "Nothing Else Matters" was released as a single on April 20, 1992, and debuted at Number 11 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Written by lead vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield as a way of coping with homesickness while on tour, the original version featured orchestral arrangements by composer Michael Kamen and is one of the few Metallica songs in which lead guitarist Kirk Hammett doesn't appear. In 2021, acclaimed country singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton delivered a twangy rendition of "Nothing Else Matters" for the charity album The Metallica Blacklist, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of The Black Album.
