There’s something to be said about the power of music to heal and unite people in the face of unspeakable anguish. In 2001, merely days after the terrorist attacks that shocked the entire world and left the United States reeling, the patriotic song “God Bless America” had a resurgence of popularity after Canadian pop singer Céline Dion gave a stirring live performance at the America: A Tribute to Heroes television special. The song, first written by composer Irving Berlin in 1918 in the midst of World War I and later revised in the days leading up to World War II, had long been associated with American contralto Katie Smith. The Céline Dion cover caused such an impression on viewers that record label Sony Music included it as part of a benefit album titled God Bless America (2001). The album debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first charity album to reach the top of the chart since the release of We Are the World in 1985. Céline Dion’s studio recording of the song was produced by David Foster, and it hit Number 14 on the US Adult Contemporary chart.
