American funk band Cameo formed in the mid-1970s and quickly became one of the most notable and successful groups in the genre. Initially named the New York City Players, the group changed its name and, over the course of several years specialized in creating catchy, soulful funk songs with dynamic rhythm sections and lush arrangements. In 1979, Cameo released their fourth studio album Secret Omen, which would kickstart a run of highly successful releases for the group. It was the first of 9 albums released by the group that would become certified Gold in the US for sales of over 500,000 copies. The song “Sparkle” was hailed by fans and critics as an album highlight; a tender, soulful ballad about love at first sight. Written by Larry Blackmon and Anthony Lockett, “Sparkle” was released as the second single from Secret Omen (following “I Just Want to Be”) and was a hit for the band, making it to Number 10 on the US Billboard R&B chart.
