Sacramento's premier alt-rock oddballs Cake formed in 1991 and honed a unique indie sound in thrall to everything from funk and country to mariachi and hip-hop, developed across a 20+ year career. Infusing their offbeat balladry with tongue-in-cheek humour and dry wit, their debut album, Motorcade of Generosity (1994) saw the band –which comprises singer John McCrea, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, guitarist Xan McCurdy, bassist Daniel McCallum, and drummer Todd Roper – test the waters before going platinum two years later with their sophomore album Fashion Nugget, thanks to the success of chart-friendly singles "The Distance" and "I Will Survive." The eighth track on the album, "Stickshifts and Safetybelts" mines much of the deadpan wordsmithery that the group are famed for, carving out a catchy retro ditty about driving an old-school car that feels lifted from the '50s.
