Released on October 29, 1996, as the second single from their second album Pinkerton, Weezer's "The Good Life" offered a revealing snapshot of the turbulent time frontman Rivers Cuomo was going through at the time of writing it. The singer, who enrolled at Harvard University after the critical success of the band's studio debut, underwent a complicated surgical procedure on one of his legs that severely reduced his mobility. Feeling isolated by his physical ailments, Rivers Cuomo took pen to paper and poured his heart out on the nostalgic "The Good Life," a song that found him remembering his old touring lifestyle with the band. A power pop with a healthy dose of dissonance, "The Good Life" was praised by critics upon its release for its memorable chorus and earnest lyrics. Despite reaching Number 32 on the US Alternative Airplay chart, the song's popularity wasn't enough to save its parent album Pinkerton from being deemed a commercial flop by their label.
