Sacramento-based band Cake emerged into the alternative rock scene of the mid-1990s with their genre-bending approach to songwriting, enhanced by a dash of irony and satire in their lyrics. After breaking into the mainstream with the single "The Distance," included in their platinum-selling second album Fashion Nugget (1996), the group continued their journey on 1998's Prolonging the Magic, which also went Platinum in the US thanks to the hit "Never There." Released in 2001, their fourth LP Comfort Eagle was met with a similar degree of success, peaking at Number 13 on the Billboard 200 chart and Number 7 in Canada. Besides the alternative radio hit "Short Skirt/Long Jacket," the album featured the single "Love You Madly" which, despite not having entered any official charts, eventually became both a fan favorite and a staple of their live performances. Written by lead singer John McCrea, the song's lyrics address the feeling of wanting to enjoy the honeymoon phase of a relationship without thinking too much about the future. A few years later, "Love You Madly" was included in the 2008 rom-com Forgetting Sarah Marshall soundtrack.
