Cake are deep in Black Sabbath country for this hard rocking take on the band's 1970 anti-war anthem, which compares military commanders to sorcerers and “witches at black masses” and criticises cowardly warmongering politicians. "War Pigs" formed the opening track on Black Sabbath's 1970 album and ur-text of heavy metal, Paranoid. Like Black Sabbath, Cake bumped "War Pigs" up as an album opener for their 2007 album Cake: B-Sides and Rarities, which comprises a smattering of cover songs from the band's 2004 bonus disc Extra Value and the 2005 Wheels EP, including a diamond-sharp reimagining of Barry White's "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up" and an accompanying scratch and sniff live version of the LP (freshly cut grass, anyone?) Here, the Sacramento oddballs tone down the heavy metal for a gnarly number that nonetheless stays true to the original except... is that a mariachi instrumental?
