"I work five days a week, girl / Loading crates down on the dock / I take my hard-earned money / And meet my girl down on the block," sings Bruce Springsteen. Backed by tinkling piano from Roy Bittan and a saxophone solo from Clarence Clemons "Out in the Street" is a blue-collar anthem from one of the best to do it. Here, Bruce Springsteen shows off his vocal chops and brings a sense of community for a celebratory track from his fifth studio album The River. One of the last cuts recorded for the LP, "Out in the Street" became an enduring live staple for the E Street Band and was performed extensively during the 1999–2000 Reunion Tour, as heard on the Live in New York City album. Meanwhile, The River brought Bruce Springsteen close to a Grammy victory, with its title track scoring a nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance at the 1982 Grammy Awards. The LP was also notably his first album to scale the summit of the Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart, where it hung around for four weeks.
