"Spirit in the Night" is a song by Bruce Springsteen from his debut album Welcome to Asbury Park. The Jersey rocker produced the record with his first manager, Mike Appel. When they turned in the recording to Columbia president Clive Davis, he rejected it, saying he didn't hear a hit single. Bruce quickly wrote "Spirit in the Night" and "Blinded by the Light" and recorded both on September 11, 1972. His band wasn't available so Springsteen ended up playing guitar, bass, and keyboards on the recording. "Spirit in the Night"is about a group of restless teenagers looking for adventure at "Greasy Lake." The song is an early example of Springsteen's use of named characters in his lyrics. Crazy Janey, Hazy Davy, and Killer Joe are introduced. Two years later, Springsteen told Wendy they were "Born to Run" and soon he was asking "Rosalita" to jump a little lighter.
The backing track for "Spirit in the Night" is available with background vocals or as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
