Bobby Bare arguably wouldn't have lasted two seconds in 2024 with a track as offensive as "I've Never Gone to Bed With an Ugly Woman," but this was 1980, and controversial songs were all the rage back then. The Ironton, Ohio-born country balladeer speaks to a specific contingent of country music fans on this meant-to-be funny song, which was originally written by Dallas singer-songwriter R.C. Bannon and featured on Bobby Bare's 1980 album Down & Crazy. After scoring a duo of hits in 1963 with "Detroit City" and "500 Miles Away from Home," Bobby Bare spent the 1970s doling out outlaw country-style albums at a consistent rate, including his biggest success story, 1973's Bobby Bare Sings Lullaby's, Legends and Lies. 1980 live LP Down and Dirty—made in collaboration with Shel Silverstein—yielded two hits in "Numbers" and "Tequila Sheila"—but his recording career started to lose momentum in the early 1980s as his knack for selling records faded.
