Blue Öyster Cult formed in Stony Brook, New York in 1967 and scored a perennial, adored hit with 1976 "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," also gaining notoriety for singles like "Burnin' for You," and "Godzilla." Five years after hitting a stratospheric career high with "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," they funnelled more of that desert-strewn otherworldly energy into 1981 album Fire of Unknown Origin. Several of the LP's songs were designated for the soundtrack of the animated sci-fi film Heavy Metal, however although "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" wasn't intended for use in the movie, it ended up in the film's final version and soundtrack anyway. Co-written by sci-fi author and cyberpunk trailblazer Michael Moorcock, this haunting psychedelic prog rumination conjures a universe comprised of infinite parallel dimensions and took titular inspiration from the 1975 Hawkwind song "Standing at the Edge", which contains the phrase "..veteran of a Thousand Psychic Wars".
