German-Canadian-English singer Alice Merton didn't fare too badly on her 2016 debut single "No Roots," a melange of synth-pop and funky art-pop that reached the Top 10 in Germany, Italy, Austria, France, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Israel, as well as reaching the Top 20 in Switzerland, and making it to Number 84 on the US Billboard Hot 100. On "No Roots," Alice Merton salutes the nomadic existence; "I build a home and wait for someone to tear it down / Then pack it up in boxes, head for the next town running / 'Cause I've got memories and travel like gypsies in the night," before unfurling the hooky chorus: "I've got no roots / But my home was never on the ground I've got no roots," to a shuffling backdrop and backing chants. "No Roots" has been certified Gold in the United States (RIAA) and Platinum in Germany (BVMI) and France (SNEP).
