The marimba riff that makes up the backbone of English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” was all but inescapable in 2017. As Spotify’s most-streamed song of the decade, with 2.4 billion streams in the 2010s, there’s no denying that the song is a pop music powerhouse. Written by Ed Sheeran along with Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid, the song also credits the writers of TLC’s “No Scrubs,” since it interpolates part of the melody from the late-90s pop hit. It was originally written with Rihanna in mind, but the singer eventually decided to keep it for himself. Featuring a minimalistic arrangement and lyrics about desire in a dancehall and R&B style, the song was released in January 2017 as one of two lead singles released to promote Ed Sheeran’s third album ÷. It went on to become a massive success, topping the charts in 34 countries and becoming Billboard’s best performing song of 2017. At the 60th Annual Grammy Award, the song won the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance.
