American grunge act Alice in Chains released their seminal album Dirt in 1992. And, aside from chart-topping singles such as “Would?” and “Rooster,” the album would be acclaimed for its deep cuts. One of these deep cuts is “Hate to Feel,” the album’s tenth track and one of the album’s most idiosyncratic compositions. Written entirely by vocalist Layne Staley (who also plays rhythm guitar on the song), “Hate to Feel” explores feelings of frustration and discontent, as well as the theme of drug use which would be a constant throughout the album.
