Released on September 29, 1992, Alice in Chains' critically acclaimed second studio album Dirt found the Seattle rockers in rare form, dealing with subjects such as depression, drug addiction, and death in an almost painfully honest fashion. The LP also featured some of the band's bleakest songs, including the promotional singles "Would?," "Them Bones," "Angry Chair," "Rooster," and "Down in a Hole," all of which entered the Mainstream Rock chart in the United States. One of those tracks was the ominous "God Smack," named after a colloquialism used to refer to a heroin overdose. Written by chief songwriter and guitarist Jerry Cantrell with lead singer Layne Staley, "God Smack" finds the latter opening up about his own heroin addiction, which was already taking a toll on his life by the time Dirt was released. In a way, the song foreshadowed Layne Staley's untimely death from a drug overdose on April 5, 2002.
