"The song is us against the world, those people who put you down: ‘I put up with many years of you putting us down and watching us bleed, now I'd like to see you bleed some back'", wrote Alice in Chains's guitarist Jerry Cantrell about "Bleed the Freak" in the liner notes to 1999's Music Bank box set collection. Fan favorite "Bleed the Freak" was first released as a single in 1991 but was originally only available on vinyl. Featured as the third single from their debut album Facelift (1990) – which reached number 42 on the Billboard 200 chart and went on to be certified double-platinum – a demo version of the song was later included on Music Bank... and the rest is history. With its stark, no-holds-barred chorus ("These stand for me / Name your god and bleed the freak / I'd like to see / How you all would bleed for me"), with "Bleed the Freak" Jerry Cantrell gives voice to his hurt and anger, and in doing so created a grunge outsider anthem for the disgruntled and dispossessed.
