Some of the rock canon's greatest hits must have been written in the aftermath of a fight. According to Alice in Chains lore, their 1999 track "Dam That River" is one of those songs, written after the band's Sean Kinney allegedly broke a table over his head. On this grunge diss track, Jerry Cantrell put his response to song in order to show him who's boss. "Dam That River" takes up space on the band's fabled 1992 opus, Dirt, nestled after the explosive opener "Them Bones" and before the evocative "Before I Die." "Dam That River" keeps the energy levels going, chucking fuel on the fire in an act of sonic aggression that's heavy on the drums and guitars and heavy on the feeling too. Throughout Dirt, they sound positively fuming, blasting out towers of loud rock on a timeless record that became their biggest commercial feat, earned them Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
