Swedish pop juggernauts ABBA have a long history of hits spanning multiple decades. But their breakthrough hit, the one that spawned a long career of hit singles, was 1974’s “Waterloo.” In fact, one might even refer to it as the proper birth of ABBA, as they had previously been recording under the name “Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Frida.” When it came time to release their second album, the band decided to call themselves by the moniker that is now familiar to millions. Like much of the band’s catalog, “Waterloo” was written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson. It was produced by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and released as the first single to their 1974 album of the same name. The lyrics make reference to The Battle of Waterloo, using it as a metaphor for a romantic relationship. The song was a smash hit, topping the US Chart and going on to sell over six million copies all over the world.
