Known for plumbing emotional depths through his outpourings with post-grunge rockers Staind - of which he is lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and founding member – on "What Hurts the Most" Aaron Lewis gets under the skin with this shiver-inducing acoustic take on the 2003 song written by American songwriter Jeffrey Steele and English songwriter Steve Robson. "What Hurst the Most" was first immortalized in song by country artist Mark Wills for his 2003 album And the Crowd Goes Wild, with Rascal Flatts also scoring a huge hit – going to Number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 – with the track in 2006. German Eurodance group also gave the country staple a pulsating dance-pop makeover in 2007 and made an impact on the charts. For his misty-eyed version from 2016, Aaron Lewis opts for raw stripped-back simplicity to tug at the heartstrings, delivering lines like "I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out / I’m not afraid to cry every once in a while," with great poignancy.
