Donald Trump supporter Aaron Lewis rose to fame as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of post-grunge titans Staind, joining in 1993 and releasing seven albums with the band until they announced their hiatus in 2012. He launched his solo career that same year with his debut album The Road, although had begun writing country music in the years prior to its release, marking his foray with the Town Line EP (2011). "Granddaddy's Gun" is the seventh track on The Road, and was originally written by fellow country star Rhett Akins for his 2010 album Michael Waddell's Bone Collector: The Brotherhood Album. "Grandaddy's Gun" tackles a controversial and divisive topic, gun ownership. Aaron Lewis was inspired to put his stamp on the song after encountering it on a hunting trip with Rhett Akins himself. Apparently, he felt such an affinity with the lyrics that he was moved to cover "Grandaddy's Gun," but not without asking Rhett Akins for his permission first.
