Floppy-haired Norwegian synth-poppers A-ha crossed the Atlantic and jumped right to the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in October 1985 with their catchy hit single, "Take On Me." Pulled along by a jittery synth hook that screams '80s pop, the song finds Paul Waaktaar-Savoy trying to convince a love interest of his worth and is accompanied by one of the most memorable videos to grace early MTV with its presence; a pencil sketch-book animation created by animator Michael Patterson and his wife Candace Reckinger that picked up six MTV Video Music Awards in 1986. "Take On Me" was released as A-ha’s debut single in September 1984 and hit the highs of success in Norway as well as topping the charts in a number of other countries, including Australia, Sweden and Italy. The song ultimately paved the way for A-ha's future fame, with their debut album Hunting High and Low selling 11 million copies and the band receiving a nomination for a Best New Artist Grammy. In 2017, the band swapped synths for an acoustic guitar to perform the song on TV series MTV Unplugged.
