Whodini scored their signature hit with this 1984 electro-tinted hip-hop ode to friendship. "Friends ‎– how many of us have them? / Friends ‎– ones we can depend on / Friends ‎– how many of us have them? / Friends ‎– before we go any further, let's be / Friends," they ask in the hook. "Friends" arrived a few years into the New York rap trailblazers' storied career, with the group riding the wave of early rap in the early '80s and adding an R&B vibe to their sound that ultimately paved the way for the drum machine-powered phenomenon of new jack swing. Brooklyn trio Whodini – aka vocalist and main lyricist Jalil Hutchins, co-vocalist John Fletcher, a.k.a. Ecstasy and turntable artist DJ Drew Carter, a.k.a. Grandmaster Dee – went on to become one of the most commercially successful early hip-hop acts, with the legendary Russell Simmons working as their manager and with four platinum-certified albums under their belt.
