After the immense success of their rap-rock crossover hit “Walk This Way,” hip-hop pioneers Run-DMC knew they needed to release an impactful follow-up if they were going to maintain interest in their third album, 1986’s Raising Hell. Luckily for them, “You Be Illin’” – the 9th of 12 tracks on Raising Hell, was exactly that. Vinyl scratches, a keyboard hook, and shout-and-response vocals make “You Be Illin’” an emblematic example of the mid-80s hip-hop sound that Run-DMC spearheaded. It was written by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, Jason Mizell, and Raymond White, and produced by Russell Simmons, Jason Mizell, Joseph Simmons, and legendary hip-hop producer Rick Rubin. “You Be Illin’” peaked at Number 29 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it to Number 12 on the Hot Black Singles chart. Along with other Raising Hell tracks such as “It’s Tricky” and the aforementioned “Walk This Way,” “You Be Illin’” is widely recognized as an influential track in hip-hop history.
