"I love the blues, they tell my story / If you don't feel it you can never understand," Whitesnake proudly proclaim in the opening lines of their blues scorcher, "Walking in the Shadow of the Blues." Written by David Coverdale and Bernie Marsden and featured on the English hard rockers' 1979 album Lovehunter – their second LP and last to feature original drummer Dave Dowle"Walking in the Shadow of the Blues" tells the tale of an outsider who has "been the black sheep of the family all along" and decides to pack and head out on the road with his guitar. "The lyric more or less wrote itself. It was very free-flowing, very autobiographical. It was just waiting to be written", David Coverdale told Louder Sound in 2018. Built on a bed of majestic organ, galloping drums from David Doyle and a searing guitar solo, "Walking in the Shadow of the Blues" is one of the more bluesy offerings on Lovehunter but still rocks... hard.
