Disenchanted with the rock and roll lifestyle and plagued by the long-lasting sequels of extensive leg surgery, Weezer's main singer-songwriter Rivers Cuomo decided to take a break from touring and began studying classical composition at Harvard University in the mid-1990s. While Rivers Cuomo was away, the rest of the band focused on personal projects and finished recording their second album, Pinkerton, during the singer's college breaks. Released as the LP's first single on September 19, 1996, "El Scorcho" was an apt introduction to Pinkerton's more abrasive sound and, like many tracks on the album, made several references to both Japanese culture and Puccini's Madame Butterfly opera. Written entirely by Rivers Cuomo at Harvard University, the lyrics in the song perfectly capture that feeling of insecurity before expressing our feelings to some we like. Even though it didn't fare well with American audiences, "El Scorcho" reached Number 5 in Canada, and also charted in Australia, Japan, and the UK. Despite being considered a commercial flop back in 1996, its parent album Pinkerton has since achieved critical acclaim and is now regarded as the best and most personal album in their entire discography.
